Module 3, Marketing Mastery

A note before we start: I am not a B-School affiliate. No link in this post, no commission, nothing for me to gain if you enroll. Not because I am against affiliate partnerships; quite the opposite. Recommending what you genuinely believe in and earning a small commission is a model I like, and it will become part of how The Swan Chapter grows. That's just not the case here right now. What follows is what I found, written for a woman 50+ deciding whether this is for her.

If you're after financial freedom, Marie Forleo will tell you flat out that Module 3 is how you get there. The core idea is simple: master marketing and stop playing small!

Marie is a marketing machine, and I mean that as a compliment. She defines marketing as empathy in action, not the necessary evil so many were taught to see it as. By the end of this module, she's aiming for a shift, not a few new tactics, but an entirely different relationship with the word marketing itself, and that's what makes B-School stand out, in my view.

She explains not only what marketing is, but why it should be front and center in your business. It's one thing to learn the skills, techniques, and tips, but if you don't understand why it matters and why you should care deeply, marketing will not be the engine of your business, as she believes it should be.

What does Module 3 actually cover?

Six lessons:

  • Lesson 1, Why I Love Marketing and Why You Will Too

  • Lesson 2, 5 Timeless Marketing Principles To Boost Sales & Profits

  • Lesson 3, Turn Words Into Money: Copywriting 101

  • Lesson 4, Persuasive Writing Secrets

  • Lesson 5, 4 Smart Pricing Strategies That Make You More Money

  • Lesson 6, Anatomy Of A High-Converting Sales Page

The first two lessons set the mindset and the principles. Lessons 3 and 4 are about the words you use to sell. Lesson 5 is about pricing, and Lesson 6 closes with a checklist for your sales page.

Where are you in your marketing journey?

Lesson 1, Why I Love Marketing and Why You Will Too, opens by asking you to situate yourself. Marie frames three levels: Level 1 and Level 2 marketers, who tend to see marketing as something separate from the real work, a chore bolted onto the business, and Level 3, where marketing sits at the core of how the business actually grows.

Most start at Level 1 or 2, and the goal of this lesson, and really this whole module, is to move you toward Level 3 before you've even launched anything, so you don't bolt on marketing later out of necessity.

One simple exercise, and here's why it works.

The exercise Marie gives you here is simple, and it's the one I had the most fun doing: start collecting examples of what moves you to actually buy something, in any industry, not just the one you're building in. What catches your attention. What makes you stop scrolling. What makes you trust a brand enough to hand over your money.

I've been doing a version of this for a while: I keep a folder on my desktop of marketing I love, and lately I've started adding the marketing I don't love too, because, in my opinion, the contrast teaches you just as much. It's become one of the clearest ways I've found to figure out my own communication style, by noticing, again and again, what actually pulls me in.

One name keeps coming up in that folder: Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa. No one who knows me would say I REALLY enjoy cooking; I am definitely not the cook in our family, but I own every one of her books, and I don't miss an episode of her podcast. What she's built isn't really about the recipes. It's a feeling: cozy, elegant, unhurried, and nothing forced. That's the brand lesson I keep coming back to, and it's actually what pushed me to add the Cozy Corner section to this site. A few people told me they didn't see the point of a cozy, high-quality items corner on a career reset website, and that it didn't obviously belong there. I kept going back to the idea anyway because it reflects me and feels authentic to what I want The Swan Chapter to be.

That's really the whole point of Lesson 1's exercise. Inspiration for your own marketing comes from paying attention to what works on you, wherever you find it, then asking what that says about the kind of brand you want to build.

What are the 5 principles behind Lesson 2?

Lesson 2, 5 Timeless Marketing Principles To Boost Sales & Profits, is where Marie moves from mindset into concrete, tactical territory. I won't walk you through each principle one by one, but they cover helping your customer stop procrastinating, creating real scarcity, making people feel safe doing business with you, using social proof, and the much-talked-about call to action, the CTA.

Why does Module 3 suddenly feel more tactical?

As you can probably tell by now, Module 3 is far more tactical than what came before it.

SPOILER ALERT: At this point in the program, you have most likely already made the decision about whether starting a business is for you, and whether your business plan is viable. Next come tips, tools, advice, and additional resources, which, in my opinion, is one of B-School's biggest strengths. So if you're still reading this review, I'm going to assume you're already sold on the idea that building your own business, as an entrepreneur or solo entrepreneur, is where you want to invest your time and energy.

Why does Marie Forleo have a whole separate program on copywriting?

Lesson 3, Turn Words Into Money: Copywriting 101, really shows Marie's belief in the power of words. She believes in it so much that she built a separate program around it, The Copy Cure. I bought it from Marie a few years ago, and I really enjoyed it, but I didn't take full advantage of it. It's the story of so many programs we purchase: we start, find something that works, run with it, and never go back to the rest of the content. That's exactly what happened to me with The Copy Cure, and revisiting it and finishing it this time is on my to-do list.

Empathy in Action, the concept Marie introduced in Lesson 1, comes back here in a big way. What you write has to sound and feel like the real you (if not, according to Marie, you can't sustain it for long), and it has to come from a real understanding of what your ICA is going through and what she needs. When you write from that place, according to Marie, you connect, and you sell, because the words carry emotion. The lesson offers many simple yet effective strategies, but you have to apply them. Work in progress for me ;)

What is the psychology behind persuasive writing?

Lesson 4, Persuasive Writing Secrets, goes into the psychology behind it. Let's just say that curiosity and anticipation are key.

Marie teaches the importance of writing authentically, whether it's emails, blog posts, or anything else, and of writing to sell. This is what I like about B-School: it's not about being witty or creative for its own sake. It's writing to sell, but not in a cheesy peddler way. She uses practical examples to inspire you to come up with your own.

Will you ever look at a price tag the same way again?

Lesson 5, 4 Smart Pricing Strategies That Make You More Money, walks through different pricing models. Very insightful, and as a consumer, you might never look at another price offer the same way.

What does a high-converting sales page actually include?

Lesson 6, Anatomy Of A High-Converting Sales Page, is about what to include in your offer. There's a very to-the-point checklist that gives you the exact how-to.

Why are these marketing concepts timeless?

No matter how much technology changes or how economic cycles turn, this information remains the bible. If you're thinking about going into business and marketing is not your forte, this module will help you a lot and cut through the chase.

The verdict on Module 3

Module 2 asked whether you could turn your clarity into one offer, priced with intention. Module 3 asks the next question: can you talk about that offer in a way that actually sells, without sounding like someone you're not? The lessons here won't make you a copywriter overnight, and Marie is clear that you have to apply them. But they explain the why behind marketing, the words, the pricing, and the sales page checklist in a way that respects both you and your customer. B-School calls this module Marketing Mastery. I'd call it Timeless Proven Marketing Concepts and Why You Should Care, because none of it depends on today's platforms, tools, or trends.

Questions you are probably asking

Do I need a marketing background to get value from Module 3 of B-School?

No. If marketing is not your forte, this module cuts through the noise and gives you the why and the how, in practical terms.

Can I write to sell without sounding cheesy?

Yes. Marie's approach is to write to sell in a way that sounds and feels like the real you, based on what your audience is really going through. Not witty or creative for its own sake, and not a peddler.

What should a sales page include?

Lesson 6 gives you a to-the-point checklist of what to include in your offer, so you don't have to guess.

Will this marketing advice go out of date?

Not the concepts. No matter how much technology changes or how economic cycles turn, B-School treats these principles as the marketing bible.
